Matanzas Riverkeeper

In 2013, the Friends of Matanzas established the Matanzas Riverkeeper, a grassroots, citizen-supported advocate for the Matanzas River. The Matanzas Riverkeeper’s mission is to protect the health and beauty of the Matanzas River and its watershed through advocacy, education, and engagement. The Matanzas Riverkeeper represents the river and the people who love it at policy making events that will have an impact on the Matanzas River’s future. The Matanzas Riverkeeper is a member of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a global network of over 300 Waterkeeping organizations devoted to protecting the world’s drinkable, fishable, and swimmable waterways.

Matanzas Voices

Matanzas Voices is a multimedia oral history project documenting life and work on northeast Florida’s Matanzas River. Matanzas Voices was born out of a 2016 Florida Humanities Council grant awarded to the Matanzas Riverkeeper, and was officially adopted as a Friends of Matanzas project in April 2017. The project goal is to preserve, curate, and disseminate the lived experiences, recollections, and impressions of the people whose reliance on the Matanzas River has shaped—and continues to shape—our regional culture. Matanzas Voices is dedicated to documenting and preserving local histories, serving as a platform and outlet for residents’ concerns and hopes for the future, and community outreach, education and engagement.
